Kei-Van Prototype #3 Launch! How to Create the “Ultimate Comfort Space” – Lessons from the Freezing Wilds of Hokkaido Part 3
DIYで理想の動く秘密基地を作る「軽キャンカー改造日記」。第3回となる今回は、車内空間の要となる「開閉式フロア」の製作に取り掛かります！
Welcome back to the “Kei-Van Build Log,” where I document the DIY process of creating my ideal mobile secret base! In this third installment, I’m tackling the centerpiece of the interior: the “Opening Floor.”
1. ボディの湾曲に合わせた絶妙なフィット感 / A Miraculous Fit for the Body’s Curves
まずは床材となる合板の切り出しから。軽自動車特有の複雑なカーブに合わせるのが一番の難所ですが、今回は絶妙にまぁまぁうまくカットできました（笑）。 実際に仮置きしてみると、驚くほどぴったり！ この精密なカットが、後の快適性に繋がります。
The project began by cutting out the plywood for the flooring. Matching the complex curves unique to a Kei-Van is the toughest hurdle, but this time, I managed a “pretty decent” cut if I do say so myself (lol).
2. デッドスペースを逃さない「150mm」の空間 / Don’t Let Dead Space Go to Waste: The “150mm” Space
今回の設計のポイントは、床下に設けた約150mmの空間です。
The key point of this design is the 150mm space created beneath the floor.
- 抜群の収納力: たいていの荷物はここにスッポリ収まります。
Outstanding Storage Capacity: Most gear fits perfectly in here. - ポータブル電源の特等席: 以前から課題だった電源の置き場所も、十分な空間を確保することで解決。設置したままでも安心して使用できるレイアウトです。
A VIP Seat for the Portable Power Station: I finally solved the long-standing issue of where to put the power source by securing enough space. The layout allows for safe use even while it’s tucked away.
3. お使い失敗！再度ホームセンターへ / Shopping Fail! Back to the Hardware Store
今日は床を蝶番でつなぎ、開閉式にする作業。 ホームセンターで揃えた蝶番や取っ手、そしてエッジの「ささくれ」を防ぐ布テープを準備しました。
Today’s task was to connect the floor panels with hinges to make them foldable. I prepared the hinges and handles bought at the hardware store, along with cloth tape to prevent the edges from splintering.
しかし、ここでトラブル発生。用意した蝶番のサイズが少し小さすぎることが判明……。急遽ホームセンターへ走り、最適なサイズのものを追加購入してきました。 こういう試行錯誤もDIYの醍醐味ですね。
However, trouble struck. It turned out the hinges I prepared were a bit too small… I had to rush back to the hardware store to buy the optimal size. This kind of trial and error is really the best part of DIY.
4. 蝶番の取り付けと床を4分割へ / Installing Hinges and the “4-Split Floor”
紆余曲折ありましたが、ポータブル電源の真上の板もカットし、最終的に床面は「4分割」の構造に。 これでどこからでも床下収納にアクセスできる仕様になります。
After a few twists and turns, I finished cutting the panel directly above the power station, bringing the floor to a “4-split” structure. This design allows access to the under-floor storage from anywhere in the van.
本日の作業はここまで！ 明日は、いよいよ蝶番のねじ止めと、布テープを使った丁寧なエッジ養生を進めていく予定です。
That’s all for today’s work! Tomorrow, I plan to move forward with finally screwing on the hinges and carefully finishing the edges with cloth tape.
